BT Voyager 1010 USB
This USB device is about the size of a small wallet. A tiny aerial is included in the design which runs the length of one side and can be erected for improved range.

It comes with a simple set-up guide, with more comprehensive instructions included on the CD. BT is pushing its wireless products as part of an entire range that includes a wireless base station to connect your computers to a broadband connection. As a result, you’re asked a number of times during the set-up whether you’re really sure that you aren’t installing a number of other BT devices as you go along. Once i got past the questions though, this unit connected with my other devices without causing any problems.

Linksys WRT54G
I bought this router from Amazon a couple of months ago to broadband connect my Desktop PC (wireless USB), Notebook PC (wireless PCMCIA) and Sony PS2 (cat-5 cable). As there is no built-in modem function, I also bought a D-Link 300G+ ADSL modem to connect out to BT OpenWorld.

I had a few initial teething problems connecting out via the modem, but everything has worked like a dream since. The connections into the router (wired & wireless) work faultlessly and were easy to setup, my only issues were fixed by experimenting with the modem settings (PPPoE and VCMux etc) and by downloading the latest firmware.

I have called Linksys UK support twice after hours & have been transferred to excellent people in the US. I would recommend Linksys to anyone, and will not be buying any other brands going forward.

excellent - eventually
I ordered the Wireless Router BEFW11S4 at £59.99 along with two USB Wireless Adapters at the end of July so as to share my NTL Broadband connection with my son’s PC, which is upstairs in a bedroom on the opposite side of the house.

The price was the best I could find and delivery was next day. However, I was connecting my Modem to my PC using USB and did not have an Ethernet Card installed. This gave real problems as the set up really expected to use an Ethernet connection between the Router and the PC. All I read and the pictures on the box seemed to suggest I could do it via the USB Adapters without installing a card and Linksys advisers seemed to suggest this was the case. After several attempts at installation and calls to Linksys Customer Service I was told to return the router to Amazon as it had a fault. This I did on 8 August and received a replacement on 26 August. This time I decided it was worth installing an Ethernet Card so I bought a Linksys Card for about £15 and set up with the router was no problem at all.

Connection to my son’s PC was equally quick and simple and to date we have had no problems at all. Yesterday my son in law set up his PC in another bedroom using another USB adapter and all three of us were online sharing the same connection simultaneously. No loss of power was seen on the USB adapters and apart from talking to each other on Instant Messenger (how sad) we would not have known anyone was sharing the connection.

The problems were partly my own lack of know how but once set up via the Ethernet Card installation was simple and the benefits in usage and avoidance of yet more cables excellent.

I would thoroughly recommend this product.
